Why sizing your press on nails is so important

A perfect fitting nail is a comfortable long lasting nail

Nails that are too small –  When sizing the press on nail to your own nail it should just sit on top you should not be applying any pressure. Why? When you apply pressure you are pushing the nail down to make it fit and this will eventually end up in the nail getting an air bubble underneath and will then lift and pop off.

Nails that are too big – If a nail is too big it will sit on top of your surrounding skin. Not only will this make it uncomfortable to wear but as your natural nail grows the press on nail will lift from the skin allowing water to get underneath and this can cause bacteria to grow – Yuk!

Nails that fit perfectly – The false nail should be in contact with your whole nail and sit in the groove exactly where your nail bed meets the surrounding skin (sidewalls).

And yeah, I know it’s a pain in the butt that you need to size them up but do we want nails that pop off after 3 days or last for 2-3 weeks and are comfortable to wear?

Why choosing the right length & style of press on nails is important

There is a number of things to consider when choosing your press on nails especially if you’re new to wearing them.

Everyday wear – Apart from my little adventure with my Made To Order Press On Nails I work in an office and being on the computer most of the day I tend to always choose an extra short length (I’ve got tiny nail beds) in whatever shape takes my fancy at the time. There’s also the dreaded housework that doesn’t seem to like long nails.

So what you do on an everyday basis should be taken into consideration. If you work in retail for example you can opt for a bit longer nail if that is what you prefer. In saying that it also depends on what you are used to wearing – I have see people that wear extra long stilettos all the time and handle everyday life.

Special Occassions – Well…. now the fun starts and the options endless but you do still need to consider your comfort level. Applying your nails with glue tabs instead of liquid glue is an excellent option for when you only want to wear them for a couple of days or a night out as they are quick and easy to remove. You can go all glamourous with something long, bright, bold or lots of bling then qickly remove them before you have to go back to the realities of life.

Style – Some embellishments like large charms or rhinestones, especially when they don’t sit quite flat on the nail, are probably not the best option for everyday wear. No matter how securely they are adhered to the nail if you knock them hard against something they can come off. They can also get caught in your hair which can be freakin annoying.

Are they worth it? OMG Absolutely! Just like my favourite charm they can bring a set of nails to life. Whether you want glitz and glamour, pretty and cute or classy and elegant just maybe keep the big charms and rhinestones to special occassions.

Nail Lengths – Apart from everyone’s nail beds being different lengths press on nails can vary in length and width from brand to brand, so buying a short in one brand may be more like a medium in another so it’s really important to check the length to be sure you will be comfortable.

Why knowing how to apply and remove your press on nails correctly is so important

Planning ahead is key, so give yourself plenty of time to apply them – just before bed is great as they have time to settle before the onslaught of daily life!

Applying your nails – It’s all about prep, prep, prep. Press on nails don’t like cuticles, shine, dust or oils. Pushing back your cuticles and buffing the surface of your natural nails will ensure they stay on!

Removing your nails – I always here people saying “but press on nails ruin your natural nail” they don’t!  It’s how they’re removed that causes the damage.

Don’t ever be tempted to just get someting under them and force them off even if you have had them on for a while and they are starting to lift. They need to be remove by soaking your hands in very warm water with some hand wash or dishwashing liquid and a little bit of oil added to the water.

Not only does this keep you natural nails damage free but keeps you press ons in good condition for round 2!
